What is MSM and Why Using MSM for hair loss makes sense plus Lots
of other benefits.
------------------
A product I have
come across that has great potential as far as hair loss is concerned
and its
relation to overall health is a substance called methyl-sulfonyl-methane
or MSM for short which
is believed by some as having beneficial effects on such diverse body systems as
ligament and bone health as well as skin and hair conditions.
A gentleman by the
name of Stanly Jacob MD who worked with the Portland Health Sciences University
in Oregon and Robert Herschler who was a research scientist for Crown
Zellerbachwere were investigating a substance called
DMSO (of which MSM was
found to be the active ingredient)
the (DMSO) was said by many who had used it for muscle soreness and joint
pain to be of great help.
Problem was it
appears the DMSO compound although very helpful for joint and muscle pain among
other things also had a negative side effect of causing a fishy smell by the
user which would of course put most people off.
Then according to many
press articles on MSM it seems the scientists discovered the active ingredient
MSM and found some pretty amazing
benefits from
this substance -- just to name a few are relief from joint and muscle pain, rheumatoid
arthritis, emphysema, skin ulcers and chronic urinary tract infections and all
of course without the unpleasant smell associated with DMSO.
Yea I know another
one of those cure all supplements - yada yada yada - been there - done that- but
from my own personnel experience from using it I think you should at least keep
an open mind and check it out.
Below is a small
list of the
benefits attributed to the supplement but I can
attest personally that it has helped resolve at least some of my hair loss
problems and well isn't that what we are here for I.E. what works and what doesn't when it comes to hair loss
prevention and hopefully maybe get some restoration?
Its highly
suggested that it be used in conjunction with vitamin C and I personally use a
half teaspoon of MSM powder in about 6 ounces of water with a half teaspoon of
sodium acerbate mixed well. I will tell you if you buy MSM in bulk as I do
because I am UH frugal- than expect a pretty nasty taste, but my no means
intolerable, you can always get it in capsule form to eliminate that
problem if you wish.
MSM is a
naturally occurring compound which is found in the fluids and flesh of plants and
animals - people included -and is estimated to make up to 85% of the sulfur in
living organisms but the problem is food processing --
The problem is as
I have mentioned in my article on dieting for example is that although this
substance SHOULD be available through out most of the food we eat due to the
normal modern food processing nowdays-- heating and cooking of vegetables and
meats (most peoples diets) much of the MSM they contained is lost.
(For those
interested in the chemical structure)
A diagram of the
chemical structure is shown below.

Sulfur and what
does it do well--
Sulfur provides
links for producing colegin-I.E.skin and connective tissue.
Sulfur is needed
to form proteins and amino acids in the body.
Sulfur activates
the various vitamin actions including C. plus the B vitamins necessary for a
myriad of body functions - B1 and B5
Sulfur aids with
insulin production and carbohydrate breakdown.
I should mention
that although there are websites that say the stuff can all but bring back the
deceased I don't believe that and I hope you don't either--I'm not pushing
the stuff so don't worry.
Ad to this the
fact that humans loose the ability as we age to extract this vital nutrient
which can result in fatigue, poor immune and organ function as well as increased
susceptibility to disease and in my opinion you see why some have reported amazing health
results.
Bottom line I
believe as I have stated elsewhere in this site that the body has to be thought
of
as a whole series of processes that have to work together for good health and
your hair condition and hair loss should be considered a key indicator as it may relate to those other
areas of your body health.
So Take a look at MSM as a
possible hair growth stimulant and maybe just a good thing for those of us who
are over 40 and so far
as joint and skin health are concerned which can affect people of all ages..
